It's a Good Fence

The past few years, the deer have really taken their fair share of my garden.  Last year they took it all - even tomatoes.  So, this year, we put up a deer fence.  The black net type.  We put up permanent corner posts and removable T posts.  The net can be taken down for the winter.  So far, so good.

Our farrier (I've posted about him before, he is a character) came over and was looking at the fence.  He says "boy, you must have some pretty smart deer out here."  I said yes and started to explain about last year....when he says, "no, I mean they must be able to read...."  It took me a minute....

We used what we had.  This tape is left over from the set up of our flea market - Ringle Harvest Day.  We put it up, because the net is hard to see.  All I could think of was waking up to a deer tangled and kicking in that net.  It also flaps around in the wind, making noises.  I have high hopes for some of my own sweet corn this year!

Blessings from Ringle, Wisconsin.

  4. Funny about the tape. :-) Isn't it incredible what we go through to get a garden! Ours is at the edge of the alfalfa field, so thus far the deer haven't been interested. But we do have a 4' fence to keep out the bunnies. Still, nothing keeps out the robins who like to get my strawberries just as they become ripe. Grrrr.

  6. For sure, what ever works right?! I have even taken to planting the kinds of things they don't like just to keep them at bay. I have to Google Ringle, Wi I live in Minnesota and thought I knew most cities from Wisconsin, but this is new to me!

  7. Don't forget to give us the rest of the story later in the season.....I hate only knowing half of any story...

  8. Glad it's working. Most of our damage come from smaller critters. We cage as many plants as we can. The cages have chicken wire wrapped around them. That wasn't working, so we put up an electric fence low to the ground. So far, so good. Your garden looks like it is flourishing.
