God's Word Wednesday - Proverbs and Commons Sense

prov·erb

noun \ˈprä-ˌvərb\: a brief popular saying (such as “Too many cooks spoil the broth”) that gives advice about how people should live or that expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true

I recently came across this book in some of my "junk" out in my pole building.  I know what estate it came from; a buy-out from a local dentist.  He had so many nice books.  Anyway, I love proverbs, witty sayings and fortune cookies.  Actually, anything that can sum up what you are feeling in as few of words as possible.  I try to do that when I write my blog posts.

This book has a proverb for each day of the year.  I thought it would be fun to share a few now and then.

Today's is:  January 8th:  A handful of common sense is worth a bushel of learning.

I respect the educated - for the most part - but, nothing beats common sense.  Wisdom earned by doing something, lessons learned often times the hard way and the "thinking on your feet" qualities are what I respect.  Must be my blue collar upbringing.  However, I understand it so much better now that I live out in the country, on a hobby farm.  Over the years, I have had some great advice from my dairy farming neighbors!

Proberbs 3:21 (NLV)  My child, don't lose sight of common sense and discernment.  Hang on to them.

Blessings from Ringle, Wisconsin.

  1. Hi Jacky! I love to start my day with Proverbs! A lack of common sense and discernment can be dangerous! Especially on a homestead! Thanks for sharing! Stay warm and have a great day! Blessings from Bama!

  2. indeed. all the 'book-learning' in the world can't make up for common sense.
