Evelyn & William - June Bride to Farmer's Wife

NOTE:

We are hosting 3 VIRTUAL Sales in June.  The premis behind the sales, is a young couple who marry and begin a life together on a farm in Ringle, Wisconsin.  This is a fictional story I wrote to carry us through these 3 sales.  Please read about the happy couple, Evelyn & William.

William heard plenty of stories about Evelyn, his buddy Frank's kid sister from Annapolis, Maryland.  His thinking on them and the letters she sent Frank, kept his heart warm on many dark, cold nights of patrol.

Frank told William that Evelyn has been working at the Naval base in Annapolis.  She is helping returning sailors cope with their recovery from stress and injury.  Both men waited for every letter from Evelyn.  Frank read them to William as they tried to think of anything other than their wet, cold feet and grumbling stomachs.  Any news from home, was the much needed lift, they both needed.  Frank kept each tattered letter in his pocket.  The two men, became brothers of war and in life.

Evelyn, also waited for any news from her brother Frank.  She treasured every word.  Frank told of the landscape, interesting people he met and of course about his battle buddy, William.  As she read the letters, she understood these stories were hiding the horrific truth both men were living.

William's family were homesteaders, carving out the clay soil with horse drawn equipment for generations in Ringle, Wisconsin.  They owned and operated a beautiful dairy farm.  William shared stories of making hay with his grandpa, dad and brothers.  About raising hogs for the county fair, the churned butter, fresh eggs, an orchard full of apples, berry patches, trees and a forest that blocked out the light of day.  Frank, loved sharing his buddy's stories with Evelyn as well.  Evelyn waited for any news of the war, her brother and of course William and his farm life back in Wisconsin.  That life which was so different from the one she enjoyed living on the eastern shore of Maryland.

As the months became years and victory was acheived, the two men came back home, unharmed from the bullets of the enemy, but scared for life with the wounds of war.  Before returning to Wisconsin, William was invited by Frank to meet his family and Evelyn.  "What is a few more days from home" William thought and "Evelyn was one of the reasons I was able to 'make it'."

As they met for the first time, William ackwardly streched his hand as Evelyn threw her arms around his neck.  She leaned and whispered in his ear, "I prayed for you and am so happy you are here."  As she released her embrase, Frank noticed her rosey cheeks.  "Hey, little sis, that's a good man right there!"  They all three laughed as they entered arm in arm into their parents home.

A "few more days" progessed into weeks and Evelyn and William became insparable.  Days filled with crabbing and crab cakes, walks along the shore and talks of Wisconsin and a future life together.  William wrote home to family, "I found the one and I am going to propose.  Get ready, I hope to come home with a bride."  After asking her dad for her hand, Frank came running into the parlor; he put his arms around his battle buddy and gave him a bear hug and said "I truly have my brother!"

On a moonit walk along the shore, William went down on one knee...."Will you marry me?"  With tear filled eyes, Evelyn said "Yes."
