Farmhouse Friday - Week 35 - To Everything There is a Season

 What a week!  Honestly....from misplaced items, shipped wrong items, replacement parts wrong size, acid for cleaning, stinky chemicals, humid, downpours, to...3 deaths.  Someone I graduated with, someone who I just did an estate sale with and my cousin.  That is life...unpredictable.  All 3 men where upstanding, independent, self-made - you know the kind.  There aren't too many left and now there are 3 less.  Examples of (too many things) to their families and community.  They will be missed!  

Here is where the outhouse was.  Trying to plant some grass before the snow. 

Our friend's have a farm stand, we bought these cabbages from them.  Al made saurkraut.  (it's making still).

My flowers are still going strong.  

More tomatoes.  I said "too many plants."  (wink, wink)  That is like 50 or so icecream pails full now.  Tomatoes for miles.

To everything there is a season.  Plant to harvest, cradle to grave.  This week really had my thinking that I need to take each day at a time and enjoy who I'm with and what I'm doing.  You just never know.

Quick Pickle of Garden Goodies

 

Oh these 2 jars make me smile.  I've been craving, briny, spicy, crunchy all summer.  I think what started it, was a jar of olives, garlic, peppers that my husband bought from this big grocery store in Green Bay.  We don't have that store and no one around here carries the brand.  They were so good!  

We have dozens of hot peppers this year and I've been eating them with everything.  So, it hit me, why don't I pickle some with other veggies.  A quick pickle, store in the refrigerator, crunchy, spicy...yes, that's what I'll do.  So, out to the garden for some picking.  

Variety of fresh herbs:  chives, oregano, 2 types basil and 2 types of parsley.  I put garlic and peppercorn in the jars

Added some cherry tomatoes and mixed it all together.  I filled the jars and pressed it down until almost to top. 

The brine is a simple 2 to 1; 2 C vinegar, 1 C water, 2 T sugar and 1 T salt.  Taste it to see if you like it.  I like vinegar.  Bring to a boil for 5 min or so.  Turn off heat let it cool a bit and fill your jars.  Put on a lid, let it cool and store in the refrigerator.  You can eat them in a few hours and they will last 3 months.  

Next up...maybe beets, raw packed like these.

Farmhouse Friday - Week 34 Old Buildings and Trees

 

The door on the chicken coop, no longer closed all the way.  This picture shows how uneven the coop has become.  Here is why.

The tree growing next to the coop is pushing it up/over.  This tree is huge!  Anyway, the door is level the building not so much.  

We plan to just keep using this old coop.  It's been a chicken coop forever and I can't stand to tear it down.  

When the girls were little, they, we could walk between the tree and coop.  Look at the roots.  I wonder how old it is.

I'm not sure if you can see the damage to this old tree.  In 1996 we had a tornado that jumped our barn and took out a different storage shed.  This old tree lost about a third of it's branches with one big split.  We thought for sure it would die, but here it is 30 years later.

In the pictures, it's hard to see, but the branches are growing into each other.  I never noticed it until now.  This brings new meaning to "and the two shall become one."

This little girl is me at 4.  I was a flower girl for my brother's wedding.  This came up on a memory on social media.  I've been thinking about this little girl and wondering, if I could go back in time and tell her something, what would it be?  I know, maybe tell her NOT to give "voice" to every thought she has in her head.  I've said some stupid things, in gist, joking or to get a laugh.  I hold a few of them with me in deep regret.  However, all the things, the good, bad and ugly, I'd do it all the same again.  All of it made me who I am today.  I can live with that and the woman this little girl grew up to be.

Farmhouse Friday - Week 33 Moving the Outhouse

 

My husband built this outhouse for my customers to use when we had events and sales here.  It was really cute inside and out.  Our neighbors have a farm stand The Veggie Barn  When I had my rummage sale back in June, I asked them if they wanted it.  Now that the hornet's nests have been taken care of, the HOT days are not as many in a row, Chuck came over to get it.

Well that idea didn't work....

O.k. let's rethink this....

Off it went, down the road....

They made it all the way to their farm, but pushing it off was another story.  Tracie wants me to share "please don't use this as an outhouse, it will be for tools near the garden."  

Other happenings here this week....

We had our 4H potluck, graduatation night.  

We went to Bay Beach to celebrate Lauren's birthday.

My husband, Al, has been working on replanting the hay field.

 

Field plowed, dragged, rolled, soil tested, limed, ready to plant with seeds that will grow in our soil.  

Now all we need is a soft rain.  We woke up to that early this morning.  Yay!

Here is a drone photo of the wildflower field.  It is the square part, as the old horse fence is still up.  We are making plans to add another planting area and mowed section for my scooter to be able to drive out there for next year.  

  

I had a package of FREE seeds and I planted them in this old crock.  What lovely morning glories!  

This was a hanging basket we bought from my friend's greenhouse, The Flower Trough, LLC I put it under the windmill as it wanted to climb.  Climb it has and I love it.  

This is Lady, one of our dogs.  She normally is a "daddy's girl" and actually would get jealous of me.  Oh, if Al would hug or kiss me, she would growl and howl.  Something happened this Summer, as she has become my little shadow.  I'm not sure if she understands my limitations due to my IBM issues and is babysitting me, or if she feels sorry for me...hehehe....she even follows me into the bathroom.  When I go upstairs, here she comes, when I go outside, there she is next me my scooter, if I work in my building, there she is laying under my table.  I'm not sure which, or why, but I'm liking it!  

We have been invited to be part of a thrifting bus tour.  Grand Ave Artifactory is planning the tour and will be stopping by our little shop on Sunday late afternoon.
