Simple Sloppy Joes

Over the years, I've tried to make a good Sloppy Jo from scratch.  The $1 can of Manwich was just too convenient.

I was craving - actually we call these BBQ's in Wisconsin - so I came up with this recipe.  I think it was the BEST BBQ I've ever had.  I'm doing this blog post so I don't forget it.

1 lb of ground beef

1 small onion diced small

1 small pepper diced small (I did red)

1/2 - 1 jalapeno or other hot pepper diced small

1/2 t garlic powder

1/2 t onion powder

1 t ground mustard (I did off brand of Dijon)

3/4 C ketchup

1 T brown sugar

1 t Worcestershire sauce

salt & pepper

Fry hamburger, drain if necessary.  Add onion and peppers, cook till veggies a little soft.  Add rest of ingredients.  Stir all together, turn on low and let simmer 10-? minutes.  Butter up a bun and toast it.

Enjoy.

Blessings from Ringle, Wisconsin.

  1. I love sloppy joes. My recipe calls for celery salt, hot sauce, no peppers. Almost similar. Janice

  2. Ha...! I have been craving BBQ's too and almost made some up this weekend but opted for a pot of soup instead. Your recipe is very similar to what I do...except add celery and some vinegar...and a touch of pickle juice, but don't had any peppers. And, of course, I don't measure anything.

    1. Thanks. It's like a church banquet, funeral favorite in Wisconsin.

    1. Did you grow up with something like this? This is a midwest classic - well it might be more of a Wisconsin thing.
