Our daughter, Anna, is a Program Specialist at Chinook Program Center for Girl Scouts of Southeast Wisconsin. She asked me to come down and volunteer to help run a program. I will be teaching around 90 girls how to make ciasteczka z maszynski - Polish spritz cookies. I still have to figure out how to say it.
So, I thought it would be fun to share some fun facts about Girl Scouts today.
1. The founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, Juliette Gordon Low, was born on October 31, 1860. Her hometown was Savannah, Georgia.
2. The first 18 girl members were officially registered on March 12, 1912 in Savannah.
3. There are a total of 3.2 million Girl Scouts across the nation, 890,000 adult members who work primarily as volunteers. The organization is also a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, with more than 10 million adults and girls in 145 countries.
4. The sales of Girl Scout cookies began in the 1930s.
5. In 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described Girls Scouts as "a force for desegregation."
The Girl Scout Promise is: "On my honor, I will try, to serve God and my country, to help people at all times and to live by the Girl Scout Law."
I am looking forward to this event and volunteering with such an awesome organization - this from a 4-H leader.

some great facts about the girl scouts! i know you will enjoy making the cookies with them...i have no idea how to say it either! my daughter was in girl scouts when she was younger, had a great leader but then she quit and it just wasn't the same for her...we lived in georgia for few years and went and saw the juliette gordon low house! i love savannah! thank you for linking and have a great weekend! :)

ReplyDeleteI was a Girl Scout . . . I suspect my students know this, too - because i get to purchase from LOTS of kids . . . then, lovingly distribute goodies everywhere possible - (especially to USO, which IS an option) - hey, thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteMy girls were Girl Scouts and then their girls were Girl Scouts. Right now the next generation is all boys so maybe they will Boy Scout.
