The other night, we had a 4-H meeting that ran a bit late, it was dark when I came home and closed up the chicken coop. I close it every night. In the morning, I filled my bucket with chicken food and headed over to the coop. When I opened the door, something caught my eye in the corner....it was a skunk! Yikes! He was sleeping? next to the dead chicken.
I have a healthy fear of firearms...but, knew I had to do something. I went and found a rifle. Only, I had no idea how to shoot it, where to load it, was it even loaded...I am clueless. After some fumbles, another gun, a jammed barrel, several misses, a bloody thumb....I gave up and drove to my neighbors house for help. Thankfully, Tom Milbeck, came over and "took care" of it.
The skunk was huge! I knew it was hardly moving in the coop...it was too fat and full from that chicken he "gutted" from the bottom up...poor chicken was just a carcass.
So, when Al came home, he decided it was time for my first shooting lesson. I'm no Annie Oakley, but I wasn't bad. At least now I know what gun to load with what if another varmint shows up. Al said "wow, you're fearless..." actually I'm too clueless to know what to be fearless over. "You sure have a steady hand" - after I shot this series

good for you. i've never dispatched an animal and would need lessons, too. sorry about your chicken! the others must have been terrified!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear he got one of your chickens. But is good that you know how to use a gun to protect your animals from now on. I'v had my share of chickens getting killed.

Bummer about the poor chicken! My hubby schooled me on guns when we moved to the new house and the coyotes were everywhere! You are a good shot!
